Secret Service Salary
A Secret Service agent must be a citizen of the United States between 21 and 37 years of age with a valid vehicle operator’s license. They must have had prior military experience and have worked in law enforcement. They must also have worked with investigations and undercover operations and must pass a fitness assessment, drug screening and a complete background check.
Special agents protect the president and his family, vice president and former presidents. They are hired on GL-7 or GL-9 pay scales according to their experience and educational background. The pay scale is parted into 10 steps which supply the agents within a grade an increase in pay without the need for promotion. Starting pay for GL-7 falls within the range of $40,000 to $48,000 yearly and the GL-9 agents pay range between $42,000 and $55,000 yearly. Secret Service agents that are based in Washington will receive a locality pay of 24.33% along with base pay.
Secret Service salary of an agent may be increased if he or she has been assigned to an area where the cost of living is higher. Additionally a Secret Service agent can earn a 25% increase for Availability in Law Enforcement. Secret Service agents work very long hours and may even be mandated to work as many as 24 hours with few breaks. They must be professional and uniformed at all time to uphold the integrity of our government. Secret Service agents spend the majority of their time guarding political figures and keeping a lookout for cautious activity that may become potentially harmful or dangerous.
